Symptom checker

Start with what it is doing, not what you think it is.

Pick the unit. These are the exact phrases Kirkland customers use on the phone — if one of them sounds like your kitchen, you already know which circuit we will be looking at.

What we hear

  • Fresh food section sitting at 50°F while the freezer is still rock solid
  • Compressor runs constantly and the unit never cycles off
  • Vacuum-tight door that has to be forced open a few seconds after closing
  • Water pooling under the crisper drawers or freezing into a sheet at the base

What we hear

  • Heavy frost on the back wall that returns within a week of being cleared
  • Ice cream soft at -5°F when the display still reads 0°F
  • Loud fan buzz or a rattling scrape that changes when the door is opened
  • Freezer drawer that will not close flush because of ice on the rails

What we hear

  • No ice at all for several days with the arm down and the bin empty
  • Hollow, undersized or cloudy cubes that melt within minutes
  • Water running down the back of the freezer and freezing into a ramp
  • A grinding noise every few hours as the harvest cycle stalls halfway

What we hear

  • Upper zone holding 62°F when it is set to 55°F and the lower zone is fine
  • Condensation forming on the inside of the glass door every evening
  • Unit humming continuously and the bottles feeling warm to the hand
  • Interior lighting flickering and the control panel resetting itself

Method

Measured, not guessed.

The reason parts get replaced unnecessarily is that nobody instrumented the fault first. Every Kirkland visit runs the same three stages.

  1. 01

Read the unit before touching it

Model and serial off the frame, current cabinet temperatures, and what the unit has been doing for the last week. Half of these calls narrow to two candidates before anyone opens a panel.

    • Model + serial logged
    • Cabinet temps recorded
    • Fault history reviewed
Digital probe thermometer held to a dual-zone wine cooler, the displays reading 61 and 64 above racked bottles
  2. 02

    Instrument the fault

Gauges on the sealed system, meter on the defrost circuit, airflow at the evaporator, current draw at the compressor. Numbers, not guesses — and you see the same numbers we do.

    • Sealed system under gauges
    • Defrost + thermistor tested
    • Airflow and draw measured
Refrigeration manifold gauges held at the open base of a stainless unit, hoses running to the exposed compressor
  3. 03

Price it, fix it, prove it

A firm figure for parts and labour before anything is ordered. After the repair the unit is pulled back down to spec and the readings are shown to you before we pack up.

    • Fixed price agreed first
    • Factory-spec parts
    • Verified back to spec

  1. No ice for a fortnight with the bin sitting empty. He checked water pressure at the valve first — nobody else had — and found the inlet screen packed with grit.

  2. Panel-ready unit wedged into a tight condo kitchen with an inch of clearance either side. He walked it out on a dolly, replaced the control board, and put every panel back without marking the maple.

  3. Thermoelectric unit in a nineties remodel that nobody else would look at. He found the cooling module tired but the cabinet sound, gave us the honest choice, and rebuilt what could be saved. Holding 55°F three weeks on.

Tell us what it is doing. We will tell you what it is.

Model number and a description of the fault is usually enough to narrow it before anyone is dispatched. Kirkland calls booked before 11:00 are normally seen the same day. The service call is $89 flat and comes straight off an approved repair.

Questions

The six we answer every week.

Straight answers, including the ones that talk you out of a call-out. Anything not covered here, ask on the phone — (425) 699-2400.

How quickly can you get to a Sub-Zero in Kirkland?

Kirkland is our home route, so calls placed before 11am are usually seen the same day. Juanita, Houghton, Totem Lake and Bridle Trails are all inside the core loop and tend to get the earliest slots.

The fridge side is warm but the freezer is perfect. Is the compressor dead?

Almost never. Sub-Zero built-ins run two separate cooling circuits, so a warm fresh-food section with a healthy freezer points at that circuit alone — evaporator fan, defrost heater, thermistor or an airflow blockage. It is a repair, not a replacement.

Is a 20-year-old built-in still worth repairing?

Usually yes. The 600 and 700 series cabinets were built to be serviced, parts availability is still good, and a sealed-system or control repair costs a fraction of a replacement plus new cabinetry. We will tell you honestly when a unit has stopped being worth it.

Do you handle panel-ready and integrated installations?

Yes. Integrated columns, panel-ready undercounter units and wine storage come out of the cabinetry and go back without marks. On tight Totem Lake condo kitchens we bring the extra hardware to do it properly.

What does the service call cost and is it credited?

The service call fee is $89 flat. It covers the visit and the full assessment, and it is credited in full against the repair if you approve the work. You get a firm price before anything is opened, ordered or replaced.

When do you actually work, and when is the phone answered?

The crew is on site 8:00 am – 8:00 pm, seven days. The dispatch line is a separate thing — it is answered 24/7, so a fault at 2am gets logged and slotted for the next working window rather than going to voicemail.

Do you carry parts on the van?

The common failure items, yes — evaporator fan motors, defrost heaters, thermistors, door gaskets, water inlet valves and control boards for the widespread model families. Sealed-system components are ordered against your specific serial.
