The board is judged last
Every decision the freezer makes passes through the board: when to start the compressor, when to run the fans, when a defrost begins and when it ends. That makes it easy to blame and costly to blame wrongly. A sensor that misreads feeds the board bad information, and the board then does the wrong thing faultlessly. So the sensors are checked against a thermometer and the board’s outputs are metered. If it is sending power to a fan that does not turn, the fan is at fault; if the call for power never leaves the board, the board is.
What the display can and cannot tell you
Two dashes on a Sub-Zero display mean that section has been switched off at the panel, which Sub-Zero describes for cleaning; turning it back on needs no repair. A flashing Service message is Sub-Zero’s warning of long compressor run or a possible cooling problem, and it points at the condenser and the cooling side at least as often as at the board. A display that goes blank or restarts by itself sits much closer to a board fault.
What moves the figure inside the band
Which board the unit uses, and how easily one can be had. Layouts differ between product lines, so the model decides the part, whether the unit is a tall column or one of the 700 Series freezer drawers.
