One loop, closed at the factory
In Sub-Zero’s warranty terms the sealed system is five things together: compressor, evaporator, condenser, drier and the connecting tubing. Refrigerant circulates round that closed circuit and is not used up, so a unit that is short of charge has lost it somewhere. Adding refrigerant without finding where it went only delays the next call.
Leak, restriction or compressor
All three land in the same band and look alike from the kitchen: a freezer that will not reach its set point. The work behind them differs. A leak means finding the breach, repairing or replacing that section, then evacuating and recharging the loop. A restriction is a blockage that chokes the flow, cleared by replacing the part it sits in together with the drier. A failed pump is a job of its own. Gauge readings and a leak test tell the three apart, and no figure is given until they have.
Nothing here is an owner step
Under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act, refrigerant may not be vented while equipment is being serviced, and the lines hold pressure. Owner checks end at the thermometer, the sound and the frost pattern. On a combination unit such as a French door freezer drawer, note which compartment has gone warm before you book a freezer repair visit; the $89 it costs comes off the repair once you approve it.
