Sub-Zero files its French door models alongside the over-and-under family: the refrigerator is on top, split into two doors, and the freezer is the drawer across the bottom. Older units carry the BI-36UFD and BI-42UFD names. The current Classic Series lists the CL3650UFD, CL4250UFD and CL4850UFD, the last of them adding a 48-inch width the earlier pair did not have.

Why the doors can be cold while the drawer warms

These units run Sub-Zero’s dual refrigeration, meaning the refrigerator and the freezer each have their own cooling system. Their faults do not have to arrive together. A freezer drawer that has gone soft beneath perfectly cold doors is therefore no contradiction: it points at the freezer’s own fan, its defrost parts, its seal or, at the far end, its sealed system.

Seal and frost at the drawer

The freezer drawer is opened low and shut with a push, and its gasket seals the full width of the cabinet. Frost gathering in a strip just inside the drawer front, or ice on the slides, means room air is getting past that seal. The far end of the scale

Sub-Zero’s warranty counts five parts as the sealed system: the compressor, the evaporator, the condenser, the drier and the tubing that links them. A leak in it is the heaviest repair this freezer can need, and it is only named after gauges and a leak search have cleared everything cheaper. What should the freezer drawer of a French door unit read?

The control arrives preset at 0°F for the freezer and 38°F for the refrigerator, each set on its own. If the display shows those two figures but nothing inside is cold, the guide points to showroom mode, a setting that Sub-Zero's customer care line can switch off. Does frost in the freezer drawer mean the sealed system has failed?

Rarely as a first answer. Frost usually comes from a drawer left ajar, a torn or displaced gasket, a frozen drain tube or a defrost part that has quit. The sealed system is judged last, with gauges and a leak search, once every cheaper cause has been ruled out on the day.
