Two freezer drawers behind cabinet fronts
An ID-24F or ID-30F is freezer in both of its drawers, and each front takes a custom panel so the whole unit passes for ordinary cabinetry. The letter I on the end of the model number means an automatic ice maker. Its container comes out once the freezer drawer is pulled to its stop, and Sub-Zero’s guide asks for the ice maker to be switched off at the panel before that happens. A three-minute delay is built in, so cubes are not dropped while the container is out.
The condenser sits at floor level
These drawers get rid of their heat through a condenser behind the kickplate. Sub-Zero’s Designer guide gives it a six-to-twelve-month cleaning interval: switch the unit off at its own control panel first, then draw a soft brush and a vacuum along the fins. Its troubleshooting pages name a dirty condenser against two complaints: frost inside the unit, and a unit that runs too long. A toe-kick boxed in during a kitchen refit does the same harm as dust, because the condenser can no longer breathe.
The upper drawer is wired
On drawer models the upper drawer carries a control cable, and the guide says it must be disconnected before that drawer comes off its slides. That is the reason never to wrench a jammed top drawer free: the cable is behind it.
What goes wrong on the freezer side
The drawer gasket works at shin height and takes knocks from feet, bags and the drawer beneath. Once it tears or flattens, room air gets in and its moisture freezes onto the slides and the back of the drawer; that cycle and its price are set out under frost buildup repair costs. Frost spread across the rear of the compartment, with a seal that still grips, turns attention to the defrost parts instead.
An ice maker that has stopped filling is a separate job with its own band, covered by ice maker repair cost. Is it safe to melt heavy ice in a freezer drawer myself?
Sub-Zero's guide allows it: turn the unit off, then warm the ice away with a hair dryer on its low setting, never holding it still, and soak up the meltwater with a cloth. Do not chip at the ice. If a crust forms again within days, the seal or the defrost parts need a proper look.
