Where the heat goes
Every bit of warmth the freezer draws out of your food has to leave the cabinet, and the condenser is where it leaves. The fan keeps room air moving across it. Sub-Zero’s guides put the condenser behind the flip-up grille at the top of Classic built-ins, and behind the kickplate at floor level on the integrated Designer and 700 Series units. When the fan stalls, heat builds up in the machine bay, the compressor runs longer and longer to keep pace, and the freezer drifts warm although nothing inside it has broken.
That is also why a lit service indicator is not proof of a dead motor. On Classic models Sub-Zero has the indicator come on when the condenser needs cleaning, so the grille is the first place to look.
Dust first, motor second
A new motor fitted beside a lint-clogged condenser is set the same job that wore out the old one. So the coil is cleaned as part of the repair, then the motor is swapped and the unit run before the visit ends. The Classic and Designer guides from Sub-Zero set that clean at six-to-twelve-month intervals, and the 700 Series guide shortens it to three to six months.

Find the condenser: behind the flip-up top grille on Classic built-ins, behind the kickplate on integrated units. Note any grey mat of lint.

Where your use and care guide allows it, turn power off at the control and clear the fins with a soft brush and a vacuum, along the fins.

Check whether a service indicator is lit. On Classic models it can simply be asking for the condenser to be cleaned.
