How Long the Sub-Zero Warranty Lasts and What Each Term Covers
The Sub-Zero warranty is the maker's written coverage for defects, lasting two, five or twelve years depending on the part. For your bill, a fan or board failure after year two is yours to pay, while sealed-system parts stay covered far longer. Sub-Zero Repair Kirkland diagnoses the faults that fall outside coverage at (425) 699-2400.

A Sub-Zero carries three overlapping warranty terms, all counted from the day it was first installed: two years of full parts-and-labor coverage on the whole appliance, five years of full parts-and-labor coverage on the sealed system, and a limited twelve-year term on that same sealed system that pays for the components but leaves the labor to you. In practice, a fan or control board that quits in year three is your bill, while a compressor that fails in year four is not.
Three terms, one start date
Sub-Zero’s Residential Limited Warranty reads best as layers that peel away over time.
| Coverage | How long | What it pays for |
|---|---|---|
| Full warranty | 2 years | Parts and labor to repair or replace any part defective in materials or workmanship |
| Full sealed system | 5 years | Parts and labor for a defective compressor, condenser, evaporator, drier and connecting tubing |
| Limited sealed system | 12 years | The same sealed-system components repaired or replaced; you pay labor and all other costs |
| Cosmetic, stainless | 60 days | Defects in stainless doors, panels, handles, frames and interior surfaces |
The sealed system is the closed refrigerant loop of compressor, condenser, evaporator, drier and tubing. Everything outside that loop, which is most of what actually wears out on a built-in, sits under the two-year term alone. That list includes fan motors, the electronic control board, defrost heaters and sensors, door gaskets, and the ice maker together with its water valve.
What a failure costs in each window
Take one symptom, a fresh-food section running warm, and follow it across the life of the unit.
Years one and two
Nearly anything defective is covered, parts and labor both. What stays outside is limited to consumables, cosmetic marks noticed after the first 60 days, and damage the warranty excludes, which is covered further down.
Years three to five
Only sealed-system faults are still fully covered. If the warmth traces back to a seized evaporator fan or a board that has stopped reading its sensors, the repair is yours to pay for. Our typical bands are $300–$690 for an evaporator or condenser fan motor and $440–$930 for an electronic control board, and the firm figure follows the diagnosis. A leak in the refrigerant loop, or a compressor that will no longer start, remains Sub-Zero’s to put right at no charge to you.
Years six to twelve
Sub-Zero still repairs or replaces a defective compressor, condenser, evaporator, drier or tubing, but the labor and any other costs fall to the owner. Sealed-system work is the most labor-heavy job these units ever need; with no coverage at all, compressor or sealed-system repair typically lands at $1,500–$3,190. Inside this window the parts share of that bill is absorbed, and the quote you get after diagnosis shows exactly what remains.
After year twelve
Every repair is out of pocket. At that age, weigh the repair against a comparable built-in replacement; the diagnosis gives you real numbers for that.
Find the date and the paperwork first
Every term counts from original installation, not from the day you bought the house or the first time the unit was serviced. That matters in Kirkland, where built-in refrigeration normally stays with the home when it sells: a buyer in Bridle Trails or Juanita can move in beside a column refrigerator whose two-year clock expired well before closing. Whether remaining time passes to a new owner is a question for Sub-Zero.
For any warranty request, gather these three things:
- the model and serial number, printed on the rating plate
- the original installation date
- the name of the dealer who sold the unit
Sub-Zero’s online product registration is the step that activates the warranty, so if the first owner never registered, do it now with the same details.
Outdoor units, display models and the parts never covered
Two kinds of Sub-Zero run on shorter clocks. A unit approved for outdoor use, which is checked by model and serial number, falls under a separate Outdoor Limited Warranty: one full year on all parts and labor, plus the full five-year sealed system term. On a covered Houghton patio, confirm the unit is an outdoor-approved model before counting on those terms.
A display unit, meaning one sold somewhere between three and seven years after Sub-Zero first invoiced it, carries one year of full coverage and five years of limited sealed-system coverage. None of it starts until you produce a copy of the paid invoice.
Consumables are excluded at every age. Replacement water filters and air purification cartridges are never covered. On CL, DET and DEC models the twist-in water filter is rated for up to 750 gallons or twelve months, whichever comes first; the usual twist-in part is 4204490, which is interchangeable with 9030868. The air purification cartridge is 7042798, a direct replacement for the older 7007067, and one lasts about a year. Plenty of units, including the UC-24 undercounter, DEU undercounter models and ID drawer models, have no internal water filter at all, so there is nothing to buy.
What the warranty will not pay for
Sub-Zero limits coverage to units in ordinary household use, installed within the fifty states, the District of Columbia or one of Canada’s ten provinces. Nothing is owed for a defect that traces back to negligence or an accident, or to installation, upkeep or repair work done badly. A gasket, valve or board that is wrong for your serial number can fail in ways that look like the original fault. While a term still applies to the part in question, start with Sub-Zero; once it has lapsed, ask for parts matched to the rating plate and nothing looser.
Who to call, and when
Sub-Zero Repair Kirkland is an independent service that is not affiliated with Sub-Zero, so a claim under the warranty goes to Sub-Zero rather than to us. If your unit is inside two years, or has a sealed-system fault inside five, contact Sub-Zero first. For the rest, including fan, board, defrost and ice maker faults outside the sealed loop, call (425) 699-2400. A diagnostic visit costs $89, and when you choose to proceed with the repair we find, every dollar of it is deducted from the final invoice. Our repair cost page lays out all six price bands, and the refrigerator repair cost breakdown goes deeper on the fresh-food side. We work across Juanita, Houghton, Totem Lake and Bridle Trails.
Before you call
- 01
Photograph the rating plate and write down the model and serial number before you call anyone.
- 02
Set a thermometer in the warm section so you can report the real temperature, not just the display.
- 03
Listen for the compressor and note whether it hums, clicks or stays silent while the section warms.
- 04
Write down anything the display shows before you reset, switch off or unplug the unit.
Still wrong after that? Sub-Zero Repair Kirkland, (425) 699-2400 — visits eight till eight, every day.
Follow-ups
Is a Sub-Zero refrigerator that stopped cooling still under warranty?
It is if the unit is less than two years old, because every defective part and the labor are covered then. From year three to five, only a sealed-system cause such as a failed compressor or refrigerant leak stays fully covered. From year six to twelve, Sub-Zero covers those sealed-system parts while you pay the labor.
Does the twelve-year Sub-Zero warranty include labor?
No, after year five Sub-Zero still repairs or swaps a faulty compressor, condenser, evaporator, drier or the tubing between them, but every other cost, labor included, falls to you. Full labor coverage on the sealed system ends five years after original installation, so from year six your quote covers the technician's time.
What do I need before calling about a Sub-Zero warranty claim?
You need the model and serial number from the rating plate, the original installation date and the selling dealer's name. Online product registration activates the warranty, so register with those details if nobody did. Once coverage has lapsed, call Sub-Zero Repair Kirkland at (425) 699-2400; the $89 diagnostic visit is credited toward any repair you approve.
